What are Silage Bags?
Silage bags (often called Murghas bags in India) are thick, UV-stabilized plastic storage tubes used to ferment and store high-moisture green fodder, preserving its nutritional value for months.
Why are Silage Bags Important?
During dry seasons or droughts, green fodder becomes scarce and expensive. Silage bags allow farmers to harvest excess crops during the monsoon, preserve them safely without building expensive concrete bunker silos, and feed their cattle highly nutritious forage year-round.
How Do Silage Bags Work?
- Step 1: Fresh green fodder is chopped finely using a chaff cutter.
- Step 2: The chopped fodder is tightly compacted into the silage bag to remove all oxygen.
- Step 3: The bag is hermetically sealed. Anaerobic bacteria ferment the sugars into lactic acid, naturally preserving the fodder for up to 12 months.
Utilizing silage bags is a game-changer for Indian dairy farmers, ensuring consistent milk yield regardless of the season or weather conditions.
